Neighborhood guide · Maricopa County · Last updated 2026-08-22

ClozeEZ's guide to Ahwatukee, Phoenix: Ahwatukee Foothills is the southernmost of Phoenix's urban villages, about 36 square miles wedged between South Mountain Park to the north, Interstate 10 to the east, and the Gila River Indian Community to the south and west. 2,096 Phoenix homes are for sale on ClozeEZ today.

That geography is the whole story: the mountain physically separates Ahwatukee from every other Phoenix village, which is why locals have called it "the world's largest cul-de-sac" for decades.

Development began when Presley Development Company acquired 2,080 acres in 1970 and launched one of Arizona's earliest master-planned communities. Housing runs by era: 1970s original Ahwatukee near 48th Street and Elliot, 1980s Lakewood and Mountain Park Ranch, late-1980s and 1990s in The Foothills, and 1990s-2000s Club West, with newer custom enclaves like Calabrea filling in. Expect stucco-and-tile Southwestern and Santa Fe styling, with hillside view lots gaining elevation toward South Mountain.

Access improved sharply in December 2019 when the Loop 202 South Mountain Freeway opened along the village's southern and western edge, adding a second freeway to what had been an I-10-only commute.

Ahwatukee: frequently asked questions

Why is Ahwatukee called the world's largest cul-de-sac?

Because South Mountain blocks it from the rest of Phoenix to the north and the Gila River Indian Community borders it south and west, the village historically had only 48th Street and a few I-10 crossings as ways in and out. The Loop 202 South Mountain Freeway added western access in 2019, but the nickname stuck.

What does the name Ahwatukee mean?

It has no confirmed meaning. Helen Brinton, who bought the original Casa de Sueños ranch in 1935, believed she was translating "House of Dreams" into Crow, but Arizona historians note the word does not exist in Crow. Developers kept the name in the 1970s because locals already used it.

What kinds of homes are in Ahwatukee?

Predominantly detached single-family homes across four decades of construction, from 1970s original Ahwatukee to 1990s Foothills and Club West, plus gated enclaves, hillside view lots, and condos and townhomes near the I-10, Ray Road, and Chandler Boulevard corridors.

How is the commute from Ahwatukee?

I-10 runs along the eastern edge, putting Sky Harbor roughly 15-20 minutes away and downtown Phoenix about 20-25 minutes in normal traffic. The Loop 202 South Mountain Freeway provides a second route along the southern and western edge.
